Welcome to Flourish & Thrive Counselling

A confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and challenges

Flourish & Thrive Counselling

Growth is within you

From time to time, we face difficult challenges in our lives that prevent us from living our lives on our terms. We may struggle with issues that affect our relationships, our jobs, our health and wellbeing, so instead of barely coping, talking to someone can really help. Reaching out to a professional for support can be difficult, but it is your first step on your journey to understanding your struggles, reconnecting with yourself and developing positive ways to move forward in your life so you can achieve your goals.

My name is Karen, and I am a fully qualified BACP registered CBT counsellor, based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, where I provide counselling for adults and young people aged 16 +. I provide a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space for you to explore the challenges you are facing in your life. I provide counselling and psychotherapy on a short term or long term basis, and I also offer telephone counselling and walk and talk therapy.

Flourish & Thrive Counselling can help you with a range of difficulties you may be facing, such as depression, anxiety, abuse, self esteem, bereavement, loss, relationships, confidence and stress. Please see my 'Issues I can help with' section for more information about how we can work together.

If you are in crisis now and need immediate help please contact the Samaritans on 116 123. The Samaritans are available to take your call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

How can counselling help you?

At Flourish & Thrive, I provide you with a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space for you to share your experiences, express your feelings and explore the difficulty you are facing in depth. In the counselling space, you will be heard and your thoughts and feelings are valued and accepted. Through counselling, you will become more self aware, reconnecting with your core values and developing a new understanding of your struggles so you can find positive ways to move forward.

As your counsellor, I will listen with warm empathy and compassion, offering you a fresh objective perspective on your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so that you can find ways to manage them better. You have all the answers within you – I am here to help you find them so you can work towards independence.

As an integrative counsellor, I will draw upon a range of approaches, such as psychodynamics and CBT, so our sessions are tailored to your specific needs and goals. My underlying approach is person centred, which means that you are in control of your journey; you decide what you would like to discuss and the pace we go at. This way, you take ownership of your counselling; you are empowered to find your own answers and make your own positive choices.

Safe space

In our busy lives, we often don’t get time to talk about and reflect on our experiences and emotions. Counselling provides you with a safe and private space to talk through any issues that are preventing you from living your life the way that you want to.

In this space, I will listen in a non-judgmental and empathetic way so you can explore your struggles freely and with confidence. This will help you reach a new understanding of yourself, your problems and how you can manage your emotions in a more positive way so you can fulfil your potential.

Flourish & Thrive

Flourish & Thrive Counselling will empower you to feel more confident. The confidence comes from within, and it’s what flourishes from deeply embedded roots created from the process of internal reflection and reflecting on yourself and what you bring to the table as an individual.

By beginning your counselling journey, you will be given the tools to flourish. Understanding yourself, reconnecting with your core self and taking back control of your life will help you grow as a person. But your journey doesn’t stop there. By empowering you to search within and find your own answers, you can continue to thrive long after our counselling relationship has ended.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a talking therapy that provides you with practical strategies to break the pattern of unwanted thoughts and behaviours.

CBT is based around the idea that your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are all connected, so by breaking them down and exploring them, you can replace them with more positive ones.

Together, we work on strategies to improve your state of mind on a daily basis.

For more information about how I work, please see my page on ‘Working With Me’.

Frequently asked questions about Mental Health

What is Mental Health?

Mental health describes your mental state: how you are feeling and how you are able to cope with the stresses of day-to-day life. Although mental health is forever changing with good days and bad days some people suffer from mental health disorders or issues where the balance of good and bad days is interfered with. Mental health is a spectrum from people who are diagnosed with a condition to those who know what their struggles are but don't have a diagnosis. Everyone's own mental health struggles are real and it can really have an impact on your life.

The Impact of Mental Health

The diagnosis of a mental health problem can really have an impact on the person’s life and development and there are many factors and events which might mean a person struggles to live with a sense of wellbeing. Stress is a main factor affecting our mental health. Some stress we can control, and others are unavoidable. You may have experienced bereavement, divorce, unemployment, isolation all of which have an impact on your overall mental health and wellbeing.

Mental Health Statistics

Mental health problems are more common than we think with one in four people experiencing a mental health problem each year. This means we all know someone this applies to and may have experienced it ourselves. Common mental health problems include anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, panic attacks, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, alcohol and substance dependency and dementia. Mental Health problems are one of the main cause’s overall disease burden worldwide and the Covid-19 pandemic is seeing increased anxiety and depression with a rise in mental health admissions to hospitals (World Health Organisation, 2023).

According to the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) 1 in 5 adults have considered taking their own life at some point. Men aged 40-49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK (MHF, 2021). Research shows that only a third of the population attending counselling are men and the evidence suggests that men are suffering with mental health, but not accessing counselling or asking for help. As evidence suggests men find it much harder to access counselling than women however, overall nearly two-thirds of people will never seek help because of fear of the stigma, discrimination and neglect.

At Flourish and Thrive Counselling by providing more knowledge and understanding about what counselling offers will have a positive influence on accessing counselling, so that you can make an informed choice for yourself. When attending counselling, the most important issue is the therapeutic relationship, but equally as important is the counselling being offered to the client. If you are thinking of attending counselling, but worried about it please contact Karen to have a chat and decide if counselling is right for you.

Any approach to mental health that’s going to work, must be adapted to the client group ‘one size doesn’t fit all’. Flourish and Thrive Counselling can help people build positive mental health, by providing a safe confidential space where you can talk about your mental health and problems and tailor counselling sessions to suit your individual needs and to help you learn coping skills and build confidence.
